Gravel - a football shoe from Ghana

"Gravel" – a football boot meticulously tailored to withstand the challenging landscapes of Ghanaian football fields. Designed with practicality in mind, Gravel boasts a hemp-textile upper and a swappable natural rubber outsole. Thoughtfully integrated lateral and medial lacing systems, along with reinforced stitching in key areas, seamlessly unite both style and utility. In response to the inevitable abrasion inflicted by these pitches, the interchangeable rubber sole offers a simple solution. Gravel acknowledges the universal challenge of durability even among the hardiest footwear, embodying a pragmatic approach to the harsh realities of Ghana's football arenas. A distinct attribute of this innovation lies in its commitment to sustainability. Prioritizing a user-replaceable component crafted from locally sourced natural materials, Gravel serves as a practical response to the issue of sustainability. Additionally, the biodegradable nature of the worn-out particles underscores an environmentally conscious perspective. Originating from a poignant narrative, the project finds its roots in a revealing research expedition through southern Ghana – a region intimately tied to Ruben's heritage. Immortalized through a series of photographs, this visual documentation encapsulates the essence of this journey, providing a glimpse into the insights and inspiration drawn from this immersive experience.

Gravel is more than just a football boot; it's an example of durability, sustainability, and the empowerment of local communities. One of my core beliefs is that a product can have a positive ripple effect. By opting for local production, we can support local craftsmen and women, bolstering their skills and livelihoods. Additionally, the decision to use materials that are sourced locally contributes to resilient local industries, while taking care of the environment those people live in.

The holistic approach to sustainability within the world of footwear is definitely the strongest aspect of this project. Seen from a technical perspective though, the incorporation of replaceable components, particularly the natural rubber outsole, must be mentioned. The way it is connected to the Upper of the Shoe changes the whole construction and therefore it became something never seen before.

Technical limitations (among others) were an essential part of the project. And the solutions to those limitations are what make this project so exciting. I strongly believe that the most relevant solutions are often the ones that must combat certain difficulties in their process. But if you want to see my solution to sustainable footwear with the possibilities that we have here in Austria, check out my new project http://printedsteps.at/
